| About the resort | |
| Puerto Rico is at the sunny south of Gran Canaria. Cloudy
days here are rare and year-round maximum daily temperatures are around
25-30 degrees C. The resort is a spectacular mix of civil engineering
ingenuity with natural volcanic landscape, built along and up the sides of
a dramatic valley, with a man-made beach and harbour. The beach tends to
be quite busy - fine for sun-worship and swimming, no good for
footballers. This part of the coastline does not suffer the strong
afternoon winds which are prevalent elsewhere in the Canaries. The beach
is made from fine Saharan sand, and the sea shelves very gently. There is
a designated swimming area, and calm sea thanks to the breakwaters, so
swimming here is very safe. The resort is mature and there is no building work in progress except on the outer fringes, well away from the apartment. Walking around the resort is easy. Traffic is relatively light and the pavements are good. There are attractive walkways through the tropical gardens which stretch along the bottom of the valley from the beach up to the shopping centre. A new cliff-edge path (not as scary as it sounds) has been constructed for access to the new Amadores beach. Amadores is a larger beach with coral sand (which won’t burn your feet). The sea shelves more steeply here. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk from Puerto Rico beach to Amadores. The resort offers tennis, crazy golf (both about 2 minutes walk), trampolines, bouncy castles etc. More amusements are to be found up the hill at the Europa Centre. | About the complex | |
| The Jamaica complex is "residential". That means that
each apartment is privately owned. Occupancy is low and the pool area is
quiet and clean. There is no on-site bar or reception. It is situated just opposite the tropical gardens about half way between the beach and the shopping centre. There are secured gates for access to the complex. Main access to the complex is from a road at the lowest level of Puerto Rico. However, our apartment is in the third row back and there are steps within the complex. Getting to our apartment from the bottom entrance involves going up the equivalent of 2 or 3 flights of stairs. | |
| About the apartment

| It is a two-storey "duplex" with two bedrooms and a
bathroom upstairs, a large sitting/dining area and a shower room downstairs with a
well-equipped kitchen. The beds are: one double, two single and a double
sofa-bed downstairs. There are fans in the bedrooms. The kitchen has everything you would expect. Small oven, microwave, fridge, kettle, toaster, 2-ring hob. The television receives all the free-to-air channels from Astra2 including BBC World as well as the Spanish equivalent of Freeview (all in Spanish). There is a selection of movies on DVD (about 50 movies in all) and the music player plays CDs, radio and casettes. There are several compilation music CDs. There is a private car parking place at the back. There is a part-covered terrace at the front for al fresco dining. The apartment has ADSL (i.e. broadband) internet connection. There is no additional charge for using it. A Linux computer is provided for your use. Alternatively, connect your laptop to our wireless network. Full instructions are provided. | |
| Getting there | |
| Charter flights from the UK to Gran Canaria (LPA) go
mainly on Mondays, but there are also some on Thursday and Saturday.
Flight time is about 4 hours. They tend to be quite expensive though unless
you can take advantage of a last-minute deal. EasyJet operate a direct scheduled flight from Gatwick 6 times per week. Ryanair fly direct to Las Palmas from several UK airports on various days of the week. There are scheduled flights several times per day from Heathrow but they involve a change, usually at Madrid and therefore take at least 6 hours. Now there are some budget airlines going to Las Palmas - beware: some of the routes are winter only. The easiest ways we know to find and book flights are: http://www.skyscanner.net Ryanair easyJet and Click via Barcelona: easyJet Click easyJet (direct or via Geneva) http://www.opodo.com/ or http://www.ba.com/ The express bus: Las Palmas to Mogan (Route 91) stops at the airport. This takes about 45 minutes to Puerto Rico. The bus goes every hour 06:30 to 20:30 every day. The adult bus fare to Puerto Rico is E5.15. A car takes about 30 minutes. Car hire is cheaper in the Canaries than on the mainland. On the other hand, the public transport is very good and convenient.
